Across the Water 2008

Across the Water was a one day conference exploring the Irish experience in Edinburgh from the famine to present day.
The Irish community have made a positive contribution to the development of the city in a range of ways. However the experience of the Irish has not always been positive as the community has suffered racism and sectarianism.
This event examined the hidden legacy of Edinburgh’s oldest and largest ethnic minority.
Speakers included leading academics, politicians, community leaders and service providers. The conference was attended by representatives of Edinburgh City Council, Scottish Government and the Irish Consulate.
This conference was for members of the Irish community and other minority ethnic communities, local service delivery organisations and funding organisations. The event acknowledged and celebrated the Irish community in Edinburgh and in light of Equalities legislation looked at gaps in the services provided to the Irish Community in the city.
The Connolly Foundation is a new organisation established to provide research, advocacy and support for the Irish community in Scotland.
This event was organised by City of Edinburgh Council and the Connolly Foundation.
